An expert system LUBRES (LUBricating oil Refining Expert System) is introduced in this paper. It helps plant operators in monitoring and diagnosing of abnormal situations in refining process of lubricating oil. The LUBRES structure, the knowledge base, and the inference machine are presented in detail. A new strategy is proposed for conflicts resolution - the sorting strategy of antecedents, and a selection strategy of knowledge rules in the memory knowledge base. Knowledge acquisition mechanism is based on an empirical knowledge table, while knowledge verification is carried out based on the directed graph approach. C++Builder and SQL Server 2000 have been used in developing the proposed system. LUBRES has been successfully implemented in Microsoft Windows Server environment. For 1 year, LUBRES has been used for monitoring and diagnosing of refining process of the lubricating oil. The industrial application of LUBRES proved its high reliability and accuracy.

In this article, we consider a model for an airport security system in which the declaration of a threat is based on the joint responses of inspection devices. This is in contrast to the typical system in which each check station independently declares a passenger as having a threat or not having a threat. In our framework the declaration of threat/no-threat is based upon the passenger scores at the check stations he/she goes through. To do this we use concepts from classification theory in the field of multivariate statistics analysis and focus on the main objective of minimizing the expected cost of misclassification. The corresponding correct classification and misclassification probabilities can be obtained by using a simulation-based method. After computing the overall false alarm and false clear probabilities, we compare our joint response system with two other independently operated systems. A model that groups passengers in a manner that minimizes the false alarm probability while maintaining the false clear probability within specifications set by a security authority is considered. We also analyze the staffing needs at each check station for such an inspection scheme. An illustrative example is provided along with sensitivity analysis on key model parameters. A discussion is provided on some implementation issues, on the various assumptions made in the analysis, and on potential drawbacks of the approach.

The bifunctional enzyme 6-phosphofructo-2-kinase/fructose-2, 6,-bisphosphatase consists of two dis- tinct domains which catalyze the synthesis and hydrolysis of fructose-2, 6-bisphosphate, respectively. In this work the properties of the separate 6-phosphofructo-2-kinase domain were investigated. For most dsRNA viruses, the genome-enclosing capsid comprises 120 copies of a single capsid protein (CP) organized into 60 icosahedrally equivalent dimers, generally identified as 2 nonsymmetrically interacting CP molecules with extensive lateral contacts. The crystal structure of a partitivirus, Penkillium stoloniferum virus F (PsV-F), reveals a different organization, in which the CP dimer is related by almost-perfect local 2-fold symmetry, forms prominent surface arches, and includes extensive structure swapping between the 2 subunits. An electron cryomicroscopy map of PsV-F shows that the disordered N terminus of each CP molecule interacts with the dsRNA genome and probably participates in its packaging or transcription. Intact PsV-F particles mediate semiconservative transcription, and transcripts are likely to exit through negatively charged channels at the icosahedral 5-fold axes. Other findings suggest that the PsV-F capsid is assembled from dimers of CP dimers, with an arrangement similar to flavivirus E glycoproteins.

Diffusion couples, WC/Co-lat.%C, V_8C_7/Co, and WC/Co-0.3wt.%V_8C_7 were constructed and annealed at temperatures ranging from 1100 to 1300℃. The concentration profile of V and W atoms in these couples were measured by EPMA. Aided by Thermo-calc & DICTRA software package, the concentration profiles of W and V in established diffusion couples were calculated by the moving boundary model according to revised dynamic parameters and MOB database, respectively. Then the concentration profile of W in Co binder during sintering WC-Co cemented carbide was simulated by the Cell model. It can provide reference for composition and sintering process design of cemented carbides with high performance. Meanwhile, the validity of revised dynamic parameters of the W-C-Co-V system is verified by the comparison of experimental and simulated results.

For many organs, the processes of renewal and regeneration recruit stem cells to replace differentiated, postmitotic cells, but the capacity of an organ's differentiated cells to divide and contribute is uncertain. Most cells of the Drosophila adult are the descendants of dedicated precursors that divide and replace larval cells that are histolyzed during metamorphosis. We investigated the provenance of cells that reconstitute the second thoracic metamere of the tracheal system (Tr2). These cells contribute the precursors for Branchless(FGF)-dependent growth of the dorsal air sacs, the major tracheal organs of the adult fly. We found that, in contrast to the cells in other tracheal metameres that proceed through many cycles of endoreplication, the cells that constitute the Tr2 branches in young larvae do not. Like the cells in other tracheal metameres, these cells arrest mitotic cycling in the embryo and form differentiated, air-filled tracheal branches of the larva. We report here that they reinitiate cell divisions during the third instar (L3) to increase the Tr2 population by ≈10-fold with multi-potent cells.

Magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)_2) particles were synthesized and modified via a reaction-hydrothermal process using Ca(OH)_2 and MgCl_2 as precursors. The influence of KOH mineralizer on the hydrothermal modification of Mg(OH)_2 was investigated. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, thermo-gravimetry and specific surface area analyses indicated that KOH played a key role in the recrystallization of Mg(OH)_2. It was found that the morphology and dispersion of Mg(OH)_2 particles ? improved significantly with an increase of KOH concentration from 1 to 4 mol/l.
